Services We Offer

Small mammals need specialized veterinary care to stay healthy, and our clinic offers services tailored to their needs.

Wellness and Preventative Care

We recommend twice yearly veterinary visits for all small mammals. During these visits your pet will be examined by a veterinarian to check for abnormalities, and we will discuss with you any concerns you may have. We will also advise you on how to best feed and care for your pet. A safe and stimulating environment along with an ideal diet will help your pet to avoid many common health complications, and live as long and happy a life as possible. Regular check-ups, blood screenings, and parasites testing allow us to catch underlying illnesses, decreases in organ function, and infections even before your pet shows signs of being sick.

We carry high quality food for rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as treats for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and rodents.

Rabbit & Ferret Vaccinations

All rabbits should be vaccinated against rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD). RHD is a fatal viral disease found in wild cottontail and jack rabbits that can spread to your rabbit via contaminated vegetables, shoes, or biting insects. The vaccine available in the United States is called Medgene RHDV2, and can be given to rabbits as young as 7 weeks old. The vaccine is initially administered as two doses three weeks apart, after which it is given annually.

Ferrets should be vaccinated against rabies and distemper. Canine distemper virus is shed by infected dogs, stable in the environment, and fatal to ferrets. Ferrets can also contract rabies, and vaccination against this disease is highly recommended. Unvaccinated ferrets that bite people may be required to be euthanized by local authorities. Ferrets need rabies vaccines yearly.

Radiographs

Our clinic has a digital radiography (X-ray) machine, which enables us to take high-quality radiographs on all our patients. Radiographs can identify fractured or dislocated bones and bladder or kidney stones, and can screen lungs, heart, and other organs for disease. X-rays can also help identify tumors, foreign bodies, arthritis, and more.

Computed Tomography (CT) Scans

CT scans are a non-invasive imaging technique that uses X-rays to create a detailed three dimensional image of an animalโ€™s body. This allows for the evaluation of bones, teeth, organs, soft tissues, and blood vessels. Intravenous contrast can be used during a CT scan to help differentiate soft tissues. We use CT scans to evaluate dental abscesses, nasal diseases, ear diseases, lung lesions, and more.

Surgery

We offer soft tissue surgery and microsurgery services for all the pets we see. We have specialized monitoring equipment and highly trained technicians to ensure the safest possible anesthesia for your pet. Our specialized radiosurgical equipment ensures that blood loss during surgical procedures is kept to a minimum. Common surgeries we provide for small mammals include spaying and neutering, mass removals, wound repair, tooth root abscesses, and abscesses in other locations.

Our advanced analgesia protocols include local anesthesia, multimodal therapy, constant rate infusions, nerve blocks, and more. We work hard to make sure your petโ€™s experience with us is free of pain and anxiety.

In-Hospital Pharmacy

Our hospital pharmacy is stocked with medications commonly prescribed for exotic pets. If we prescribe a medication that we donโ€™t keep in-house, we will ensure that your prescription is filled by a reliable and accredited human pharmacy or compounding pharmacy.

Microchipping

Microchip identification is the most reliable way to reunite pet owners with their lost pets. We use the smallest size of microchips available, making implantation safe, easy, and quick. We commonly place microchips in rabbits, but they can be placed in any species.

Hospitalization

When your small mammal needs specialized care, we are here to help. We offer intensive care for sick pets, including intravenous fluid administration, oxygen therapy, nutritional and heat support, nebulization, and necessary medications. Your petโ€™s hospitalization will be tailored to address his or her unique medical needs.

Senior Pet Care

Just as our health care needs change as we age, your petโ€™s health care needs also change. Nutritional needs, exercise habits, and many aspects of your petโ€™s daily routine will change over time. As with humans, health issues that affect older pets can begin with very subtle changes that may go unnoticed until the problem has become serious.

Regular wellness visits are important for every stage of your petโ€™s life. What looks like normal aging may in fact be due to a treatable disease. Even if your senior pet is already being treated for a medical condition, the recommended treatments may change as a condition progresses. Routine blood tests and other diagnostic testing are important for senior pets because they allow us to evaluate how your petโ€™s health is responding to current management strategies or changing with age. We are here to help ensure that your pet is safe and happy throughout all stages of their life.

Blood Testing

We run in-house blood tests for small mammals, including comprehensive chemistry panels and complete blood counts. Complete blood counts examine red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Chemistry panels evaluate kidney function, liver function, glucose, blood proteins, and electrolytes such as calcium, sodium, and potassium. We also partner with outside laboratories to run other, more specialized blood tests, such as those that check thyroid levels or screen for E. cuniculi infections.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound, a non-invasive imaging technique using ultrasonic waves, is used to create images that show the size and shape of organs and tissues in real time. This allows us to examine the heart, liver, kidneys, bladder, and more using a quick and pain-free process.

Other Diagnostic Testing

We offer Gram stains, fecal exams, urinalyses, and cytology exams in-house. We also work with multiple laboratories around the country that offer specialized tests for small mammals, including bacterial and fungal cultures, PCR tests for viral and parasitic diseases, serology for E. cuniculi, assays for lead and zinc, serology for hormone levels, biopsies, and more.

Dental

We offer dental services for all small mammals. We regularly perform tooth trims on mammals whose teeth grow continuously, such as rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, and chinchillas. We have the ability to evaluate teeth and associated structures using both radiography (X-rays) and CT scans. We also perform more advanced dental procedures, such as extractions and tooth root abscesses. For animals such as ferrets whose teeth do not grow continuously we can do ultrasonic tooth cleaning.

Flea and Mite Control

Small mammals can get fleas, ticks, lice, and mites, especially if they spend time outdoors. Please be aware that some over-the-counter flea medications intended for dogs and cats, including Frontline and organophosphates, are toxic to rabbits.

Medical Grooming

We offer grooming services for all small mammals. This includes nail trims, sanitary trims, removing matted fur, and clipping fur away from wounds.

Emergency Services During Business Hours

In case of emergency, the highly-trained veterinarians and staff at the Exotic Pet Clinic of Santa Cruz are here to help. Please call us in advance so we can make sure we have time to see your pet and can set up needed equipment in preparation for your arrival.
